Beautiful

The song ‘Beautiful’ (2002) by Christina Aguilera inspired me to write this poem. Like all my music-inspired poems, I suggest playing the song{which I have embedded below for your convenience} as you read; it truly elevates the experience!

Beautiful – poem by Ruelha

I don't want to go out into the world
Inside my blanket, I want to lay curled
And hide myself
In loneliness to dwell

I fear nobody will accept me
When I look into the mirror, all I see
Is disappointment and shame
Mixed with tears and pain

I'd rather stay away from people
That is the best principle
I don't want to dodge more daggers
I'm already injured; and my walk is staggered
Yes, that used to be me
But, that's no longer my reality
Today, I don't mind you staring
Because I'm no longer comparing

I don't care about the models on FTV
I'll continue eating chocolate and ghee
All those airbrushed images in magazines
I'm not depriving myself to that extreme

This is my body; this is me
I no longer conform to the norms of society
You don't have to like me; you're entitled to a prefrence
But, I'm not using standard units of measure for reference

Scars on my body, scars on my soul
It's a package deal; I come as a whole
All my experiences taught me everything I know today
Sure, some were rotten, but I'm done denying anyway

You can either accept me for who I am
Don't be so concerned about my weight in kilograms
Or you can keep spewing and hurling out criticisms
But, there's nothing you can do to alter my enthusiasm
Even the most beautiful woman in the world
Facing the mirror, her insecurities unfold
Each and every girl, however asthetically pleasing
Sees negligible flaws and begins grieving

Sure, she may exuberate confidence in your face
But, through internal conflicts and countless debates
Much of what she sees is flaws
Most of which have refutable cause

Why be fixated on conventional beauty
Let's just focus on humanity and duty
It begins with self-acceptance, the cornerstone of peace
Gradually and eventually, those voices will decrease

You are beautiful, no matter what they say
As long as you attempt to get through the day
Let not words bring you down
Stand tall; don't let it slip - your crown!

Lyrics of Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful

Don't look at me
Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly it's hard to breathe
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain
I'm so ashamed
I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today
To all your friends you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill the emptiness
The pieces gone, left the puzzle undone
Is that the way it is?
You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down, oh no
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today
No matter what we do
(No matter what we do)
No matter what we say
(No matter what we say)
We're the song inside the tune (Yeah)
Full of beautiful mistakes
And everywhere we go
(And everywhere we go)
The sun will always shine
(The sun will always, always shine)
And tomorrow we might wake on the other side
'Cause we are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words won't bring us down, no, no
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring us down, oh, no
So don't you bring me down today
Ooh-oh-oh, yeah
Don't you bring me down today
Yeah, ooh
Don't you bring me down
Ooh, today
