Frozen

Remember this song, anyone? Well, it released in 1998. I remember it was my favourite tune for quite a while then. The video is undoubtedly sinister. Being brought up Catholic, I always felt immense guilt listening to it and humming it all day and night. I am a sucker for songs that have multiple interpretations that can be so immensely varied. This song has so much depth. It’s one of those – feel free to pick one! I’ve attempted to inculcate most of the renditions in my poem in an attempt to do an iota of justice to this fascinating song! I’ve listed some of them:

  • Satan’s CTA: It feels as if Lucifer is connivingly coaxing the holy innocents to submit to the lusts of his world – sin, temptation, vanity, addiction, greed, hatred, unforgiveness etc.
  • Consumerism: It can be seen as how materialism and instant gratification have destroyed piety and virtue.
  • Offer to Love: It’s about a woman desperately trying to melt the heart of her cold-hearted romantic interest. She offers him unconditional love and happiness. But the choice to genuinely love, that key lay in his frozen hands.
  • Search for Love: This is the most weird rendition. You’d really have to be a hopeless romantic to twist the lyrics to suit this adaptation where we’re all rooting for Madonna’s endless search for true love!
  • Trust Issues: It brings to light the trust and domestic issues of a couple fighting to make it.
  • Mythology: It’s about Madonna standing in the valley of death representing Hecate, the goddess of witches.

Frozen – poem by Ruelha

You only see what your eyes want to see.
But how can things be how you want them to be.
You're living in denial.
With the IQ of a timid child.
You've frozen your faculties.
Denying life's realities.
It's not like you're blind.
Yourself chosen to close your mind.
Is that your protective shield of armour?
That you've been wearing since the first tremor!

You're already broken.
And your heart's frozen.
And now to la-la land, you've taken a token.
What will it take for you to be woken?

So give yourself to me.
Now, you hold the key.
I can change your life completely.
Just be present genuinely!

Let me melt your stone heart.
And from your arteries blood will start.
To flow, breaking all the ice.
That covers whatever good is left of you inside.

What's the point in fighting over blame?
When at the end of it all, it's only been pain.
It's hard to get rid of your demons.
For precisely these tender reasons.

They were holding you nice and tight.
When the whole world pounced on you to fight.
It's not like you couldn't distinguish between wrong and right.
It's not like for evil you had a big appetite.

It's just that in this world you can see.
All things shiny that belong to me solely.
The lord of flies.
Tells only lies.

But there are things beyond your realm.
If you began to see, they'd just overwhelm.
It's grace that kept you protected.
Even when confused, you rejected.

Love is a bird; she needs to fly.
Let all the hurt inside of you die.
You behave like this.
Because you've never felt real bliss.

Now there's no point in closing your heart.
Open the gates and stop pretending to be smart.
Because you're frozen.
As your heart's not open.

You only see what your eyes want to see.
But how can things be how you want them to be.
You're living in denial.
With the IQ of a timid child.
You've frozen your faculties.
Denying life's realities.
It's not like you're blind.
Yourself chosen to close your mind.

You only see what those eyes want to see.
You've been living beyond thresholds of reality.

You only see what those eyes want to see.
Open those peepers and stop living blindly.

You only see what those eyes want to see.
If you only begin to think impartially.

You only see what those eyes want to see.
But they're unreal, unicorns and fairies.

You only see what those eyes want to see.
When will you begin to judge properly?

You only see what those eyes want to see.
Your hacking your own self with a machete.

You only see what those eyes want to see.
When will you flee from this idiosyncrasy?

They're all frozen.
Because their hearts aren't truly open!

Madonna’s song Frozen {lyrics}

You only see what your eyes want to see
How can life be what you want it to be?
You're frozen
When your heart's not open
You're so consumed with how much you get
You waste your time with hate and regret
You're broken
When your heart's not open
Mmm mmm mmm
If I could melt your heart
Mmm mmm mmm
We'd never be apart
Mmm mmm mmm
Give yourself to me
Mmm mmm mmm
You hold the key
Now there's no point in placing the blame
And you should know I suffer the same
If I lose you
My heart will be broken
Love is a bird, she needs to fly
Let all the hurt inside of you die
You're frozen
When your heart's not open
Mmm mmm mmm
If I could melt your heart
Mmm mmm mmm
We'd never be apart
Mmm mmm mmm
Give yourself to me
Mmm mmm mmm
You hold the key
You only see what your eyes want to see
How can life be what you want it to be?
You're frozen
When your heart's not open
Mmm mmm mmm
If I could melt your heart
Mmm mmm mmm
We'd never be apart
Mmm mmm mmm
Give yourself to me
Mmm mmm mmm
You hold the key
If I could melt your heart
Mmm mmm mmm
We'd never be apart
Mmm mmm mmm
Give yourself to me
Mmm mmm mmm
You hold the key
If I could melt your heart
