This song was top of the charts as soon as it released in 2001. With those golden locks and the figure of a Greek goddess, this damsel belly danced her way into my memory. Shakira is one of the few artists who writes her own lyrics. Being a writer, I have immense respect for her. The video commences with this svelte drenched woman who ascends from a desolate slumber into an exciting world where drastic things are constantly happening and the elements are radically evolving. One moment she’s in an arid desert, another – she’s in the midst of a horse stampede. She’s dancing and smiling through it all. She’s oblivious to the rampant dangers engulfing her because she’s got that maddening spark of romantic hope in her eyes. She’s not worried about the next meeting and the nature of their long distance relationship. She’s not wasting her feelings on those. She chooses to savour the present moment and dwell in positivity constantly believing destiny will work something out for her. She professes her immense love for her partner who is far away in some foreign land. And as difficult as long distance relationships are, she seems confident in her love and fate. There is something so raw about this song with Shakira dancing bare feet, absolutely comfortable among the elements. She’s wading through muck and is willing to go through all the hassle with a confident smile. She’s not just making this relationship work, she’s actually enjoying it. And when it’s time to part, she gracefully submerges herself into the sea in anticipation to be brought back to life …whenever, wherever she and her lover are meant to be together again.
Whenever, wherever – poem by Ruelha
It's thrilling, yet almost killing; and sometimes, unforgiving. But even through this distance, I'm smiling with no hesitance. Far away, you're in some foreign land, I imagine myself beside, holding your hand. Because whenever, wherever... we're meant to be together. I'll be there and you'll be near. And that's the deal, my dear. Don't you ever doubt or wonder. Nothing can tear us asunder.
I would climb the tallest mountain. to cherish moments at your fountain. To get acquainted with your body. Memorize it all and make a mental copy. So when we're far away. I'll close my eyes and hit 'replay'. Because whenever, wherever... we're meant to be together. I'll be there and you'll be near. These moments apart are just a mere. What really matters is the connection. Irrespective of our present situation.
My lips don't deceivingly mumble. False praise or begin to grumble. About the distance between us, I'm not the one to annoy and fuss. These lips, they only spill kisses. Building imaginary love bridges. Because whenever, wherever... we're meant to be together. I'll be there and you'll be near. Of this, I'm just so sure. We can always play by ear. Because this love is sincere.
You've got me head over heels. Nobody understands how it feels. I'm at your feet. You're my heartbeat. If you decide to leave forever, I'll incessantly cry out a river. Because whenever, wherever... we're meant to be together. I'll be there and you'll be near. In my head, it's all so clear. Just knowing of your existence, makes me blush through this distance.
Before you, I never could imagine, such intense craze and attraction. That there'd be ten million ways. And I'd still fall short of days. To express all of my affection. Loving you is my only intention. Because whenever, wherever... we're meant to be together. I'll be there and you'll be near. So, I have no fear. I've left it up to fate. I'm so sure; there's no debate.
These two eyes look for no other. Will never lose sight or ever wander. All along, they search for you. You're far away, still in my view. On you, I have fixed my gaze and focus. My entire world, my only globus. Because whenever, wherever... we're meant to be together. I'll be there and you'll be near. The universe will cooperate to interfere. With patience, I'll gladly wait. Until once again, you're at my gate.
Through the mountains and stormy waters, I wade through all the murky pressures. When it quakes and when its cold, I don't crumble, hold back or fold. I dance between seething horses. All the elements and invisible forces. Because whenever, wherever... we're meant to be together. I'll be there and you'll be near. when it's time to reappear. The universe conspires. It recognizes genuine desire.
And back into the lonely sea, I descend and wait there patiently. For just another moment with you. Precious time one by one, I accrue. In tamed hibernation. My heart's isolation.

This poem is purely literary. Please read it with an open mind and out of respect for the written word. To me, writing is my life. There is nothing I love more. I have a very creative imagination. Most of my poems do not hint at my life/situation. Kindly refrain from drawing such parallels. Much of what I write is purely fictional. I have always written from my heart …about topics that I am passionate about – Christianity, makeup, melancholic poetry, food, romance, women’s issues, soulful music, narratives etc. Given the circumstances, my gender, situation, geography etc., I feel the need to put up a disclaimer every time I write a romantic/melancholic/intense piece. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. But, please don’t interpret this poem in a way it was not intended. That is just my humble request. Please note, some of my writings may contain material unsuitable for children.
Lyrics of Whenever wherever
Lucky you were born that far away so We could both make fun of distance Lucky that I love a foreign land for The lucky fact of your existence Baby, I would climb the Andes solely To count the freckles on your body Never could imagine there were only Ten million ways to love somebody (body, body) Lucky you were born that far away so We could both make fun of distance Lucky that I love a foreign land for The lucky fact of your existence Baby, I would climb the Andes solely To count the freckles on your body Never could imagine there were only Ten million ways to love somebody (body, body) Ledo lo le lo le, ledo lo le lo le Can't you see? I'm at your feet Whenever, wherever We're meant to be together I'll be there, and you'll be near And that's the deal, my dear There over, hereunder You'll never have to wonder We can always play by ear But that's the deal, my dear Lucky that my lips not only mumble They spill kisses like a fountain Lucky that my breasts are small and humble So you don't confuse them with mountains Lucky I have strong legs like my mother To run for cover when I need it And these two eyes that for no other The day you leave, will cry a river Ledo lo le lo le, ledo lo le lo le (one more time) At your feet, I'm at your feet Whenever, wherever We're meant to be together I'll be there, and you'll be near And that's the deal, my dear There over, hereunder We'll never have to wonder Ledo lo le lo le, ledo lo le lo le Think out loud, say it again Ledo lo le lo le lo lo Tell me one more time That you'll live lost in my eyes Whenever, wherever We're meant to be together I'll be there, and you'll be near And that's the deal, my dear There over, hereunder You'll never have to wonder Whenever, wherever We're meant to be together I'll be there, and you'll be near And that's the deal my dear There over, hereunder You've got me head over heels There's nothing left to fear Come on listen (If you really feel the way I feel)
Was it really that long ago??? Uffff

Shakira is Colombian of Lebanese descent. She has visited Lebanon years ago to remind herself of the land of her parents and grand parents …
