Everybody around is cutting their own hair.
Or asking their partner to trim it in despair.
Posting pictures of it proudly.
Not ashamed of calling it out loudly.
But it's not new to me.
I've always been cutting my own hair, you see!
I just bunch it up and bring it up front.
Hold it like a paint brush and chop it, no fancy stunt.
And if I'm in the mood for bangs,
I don't go to the fancy salon at Wang's.
I let my hair fall on my face.
Like a scene from a horror movie, like I'm looking through lace.
And snap-snap my scissor goes.
Until I can see my eyes, I suppose.
In reality I've not had more than five.
All my life, that's the count on which I survived.
I'm talking about a professional haircut.
Those were the times, layers I wanted to strut.
Otherwise, straight and messy suits me just fine.
What's the worst that could happen? It'll grow back in time.
You know, it's just hair.
It's not like surgery, to that you can't compare.
I'm accustomed to this since childhood.
My mum always cut my hair, and she did really good.
She had a lot of patience, unlike me.
She even had a special scissor just for this, you see.
Sectioned and kept rechecking if every level was right.
Never one short and the other long, under her sight.
She always cut it short and blunt.
It was easier to maintain considering the grooming rules.
Or else I'd have to wear pigtails every day to school.
But she'd always make me a fringe.
And maintain it inch by inch.
She thought it made me look cute.
That was my only look, the absolute.
Knick knacks and trinkets she brought home every week.
Colorful bobby pins, hair clips, hair bands and coconut trees.
Sunday was the day to get me all dolled up.
Going to church, almost doing the catwalk.
Till date, every now and then,
she keep buying me accessories, clips and trinkets when...
I visit, all things bright and beautiful.
Many of which, only for children suitable.
As a child, in the beginning,
I had a little trouble admitting.
Because all the other kids would name
Fancy salons and I'd stand there a bit ashamed.
But everyone's cutting their own hair now.
Patting themselves on their backs saying wow.
I'll tell you this, time is a wonderful thing.
One day you're a pauper, next day you could be king!

Very interesting, and well written.
I’ve had the same hairstyle all my life, including the bangs. π

I think it is easier to cut your hair if it were as long as yours and you are only cutting a few inches. I’d like to cut mine, too but the pixie or bob cuts are harder to do on your own especially when my arm aches when stretched way back.

That’s true. I agree it would be very difficult to cut short hair. You need someone who is willing to help. π πββοΈππππ πββοΈ

This poem was fun to read. Any time I have cut my own hear it was a disaster.

Great poem. I would not cut my own hair, but I do cut my fiance hair. What hair he has.

Lovely poem Ruelha. I just did chop off some of my hair over the weekend as I felt it looked bored and needed a bit of a mess. I don’t know if its perfect but I have been doing my trims since of late though I must admit I used to do that a lot when I was in my teens and did end up with an awkward very short fringe.

Ah …the awkward fringe….
Been there done that …..
Several times before….
Until few years ago…
Hows the new messy look?
Hope it turned out greatπ

Unfortunately its not messy enough for me as I have to look professional for work. I badly want to get a fringe again. I never had it as a child but eventually I did try it out just a few times.

Oh no, I remember the times I had a uniform and followed strict hairstyle guidelines….I couldn’t keep bangs then and kept pining for them…I totally understand ππβΉ

I decided not to target a specific day. In fact I didn’t want to put up decorations either….not because of covid. Covid didn’t affect me/my mindset in any way. But, I thought I’d make small batches of treats all through December……its less hectic that way….what about you Dew? What’s the plan this Christmas?βοΈπβοΈπππ·

Hey Ruelha. sorry I was off wordpress last month. I generally don’t celebrate Christmas that much now. I used to before as a child and growing up etc. This year, it was a very quiet one this time at home with my husband. we generally travel somewhere during this time but have been indoors for months. But I did get a tree and decorated it this time. Hope you have a blessed 2021! And may all your sweet dreams come true. π

Nah…..too damaging. Haven’t coloured or used styling products on my hair in almost 12 years now….except that I ironed my hair a year ago for my brother’s wedding….
